BABY ALPACA PONCHO NEGRO MUNAY

BABY ALPACA PONCHO NEGRO MUNAY

Handwoven in Peru

Regular price €149,95

A truly unique, one-off and handmade piece. Produced in low volumes, this poncho made of baby alpaca is soft to the tacto and elegant in design. Hand-dyed using native plants from Peru and woven using a pedal loom, this poncho is chemical free and uses 100% natural fibre.

A curious and interesting fact: The term "baby alpaca" wool refers to the wool fiber that comes from the first shearing of an alpaca, and not to the age of the animal itself. The first shearing is done when the alpaca reaches adulthood at the age of 3 years old. This makes baby alpaca fiber exceptionally fine and soft, making it a highly valued material for high-quality garments.

Did you know that the word Munay is a quechua word and it means Love or to love? It represents the concept of affection, compassion and the act of loving or caring for someone or something. And in the Latin culture, we say that a way to show someone your love is when you care for that person.

The design of this poncho is very special to me. I created it out of a necessity. My son was born in winter, and during that time I wanted something to cover and warm my body, but at the same time, something I could use to wrap my newborn when carrying him or holding him in my arms. The idea of using a garment that is easy to wear, provides warmth, and can also be used to wrap my newborn, inspired me to design this poncho.

When it was time to choose the material, I opted for baby alpaca. Baby alpaca is the finest fibre from the alpaca, and since it was meant to keep my baby warm, I obviously wanted the most delicate fabric for his skin. By the way, baby alpaca does not refer to the age of the alpaca; it refers to the fibre that comes from the first shearing when the alpaca reaches the adult age of 3 years old.

The fringes are from different colours, as I have always thought that life is a combination of colourful nuances. Life is colour. And this poncho aims to celebrate happiness and life.

I hope that each Andina World piece adds warmth and beauty to your home and outfit for years to come and that you find a truly unique, one-off handmade piece.

Alpaca is a natural fibre. It is softer, stronger and warmer than merino and cashmere. Alpaca farming is sustainable, as alpacas are free roaming and shorn once a year. Alpaca fibre can last decades and it will bio-degrade at the end of its useful life.
